The first phase (280,000 of the 1.5 million square foot (26,000 of 140,000 m2) shopping center has been commissioned. The site encompasses approximately 200 acres (81 ha) of land. A horizontal directionally drilled borehole GHX built under the parking area provides heating and cooling for the buildings.
The first phase includes approximately 17 restaurants and stores. Energy is transferred to and from each of the buildings as needed. The diversity of store types provides an ideal situation to transfer energy from one store to another, while one store is cooling while the next is heating.
Heat pumps located in the ceiling space of each of the stores replace conventional gas / electric rooftop heating and cooling units. The piping system is designed to accommodate potential future changes in the size and use of the individual stores.
