Think of a GHX as an energy storage medium rather than an energy source or an expensive cooling tower. A GHX takes advantage of a huge mass of soil and rock and can store huge amounts of energy. It's low grade energy...the temperatures typically don't get much above 95°F (35°C), but because of the large mass, it can store vast amounts of it. Energy rejected into the GHX one day can be extracted the following night. A GHX can also store energy on a seasonal basis. Energy removed from air conditioning all summer is extracted the following winter. Waste energy from an industrial process or from renewable solar energy can also be stored in the ground and extracted later.
Alternately, energy can be extracted from the ground and dissipated to the atmosphere to lower the temperature of the ground...in effect, storing cold in the ground.
Many of the projects I've been involved in take advantage of the storage capacity of the ground, either seasonally, or on an annual basis. The projects highlighted on this site demonstrate the versatility of GCHP systems. They are all projects I have been directly involved with during my career with a variety of companies, including manufacturers, equipment suppliers and engineering consulting firms.
The knowledge gained from working with the stakeholders in these and hundreds of other projects has provided the basis for the commercial design process and workshops.
