Commercial Ground Coupled Heat Pump Design Course

Thank your to each of you who took the time to respond to my survey about design training. Your responses confirmed some of my suspicions about why designers are not taking the time to learn what's different about designing a ground coupled heat pump system compared to designing a conventional HVAC system.

Some of the highlights:

• Almost 60% said they regularly design GCHP systems and recommend them to their clients, and almost 40% more occasionally design them
• 50% have taken an IGSHPA course, but over 20% have never attended a course. About 60% have taken courses offered by equipment suppliers or other industry associations
• 50% found the courses they took very valuable and 30% found them to be somewhat useful
• Over 50% said they've had clients ask them to design a GCHP system
• There were 2 big complaints about the way courses are traditionally delivered. The require a lot of time away from the office and productive work (40%) and 53% said they were seldom offered at a convenient time or place...no surprise here.
• Respondents estimated the cost of travelling to a course outside their own city averaged almost $7,000, including registration, travel and time away from productive work
• Overwhelmingly, respondents said it would be advantageous to be able to bring architects, mechanical contractors, drillers and even potential clients to at least parts of a course
• If the barriers to taking the courses could be overcome, over 90% of the respondents said they would take a course...if it were conveniently located scheduled.
